Accident Destroys Oakwood Cemetery Sign, Damages Headstones

A crash in downtown Montgomery on Sunday morning destroyed one of the main signs at Oakwood Cemetery, where country music legend Hank Williams is buried, and damaged multiple headstones.

The granite sign, which featured the lyrics to Williams’ song I Saw the Light and his picture etched into it, was shattered and left lying in pieces. An Action 8 News crew also observed tire tracks in the grass and several nearby headstones that had been broken or knocked over.

According to the Montgomery Police Department, a 2009 Dodge Caravan struck the sign and the headstones. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police have not said whether the crash was accidental or deliberate or if any charges are pending.

Williams’ grave was not damaged.
