Selma Renaissance Faire Brings Medieval Times to West Alabama
SELMA, Ala. — Visitors to the Selma Renaissance Faire took a step back in time this weekend, dressing in medieval finery and enjoying jousting, dance performances, artisan booths, and classic fare like turkey legs and pork kabobs.
Organizers said approximately 2,000 people attended Saturday’s festivities alone.
For those who missed the event, the faire will continue next weekend on April 5 and 6.
Joe Farley, known at the event as “Sir Alexander Brighthelmston,” said the faire was born out of a passion for medieval history.
“We are a bunch of medieval enthusiasts,” Farley said. “We built this site for medieval enthusiasts, and we’ve been renting it for about 10 years to different reenactment organizations. We decided to share our love of all things medieval with the public, so we opened up, and this was our first year doing a ren-faire. The outpouring of support has been incredible. It’s one thing to read about it in a book, it’s another thing to see it.”
The two-day event featured various demonstrations, including how to string a longbow.
