CBS News Poll: Most support Trump’s deportation program, less sure on tariffs

A new CBS News poll shows most of those asked support President Trump’s efforts to deport illegal immigrants, but they say he’s focusing too much on tariffs and not enough on lowering prices.

The poll shows an even 50-50 split on President Trump’s job performance overall, and another 50-50 split on his work to cut spending and staff at federal government agencies.

When asked about his program to deport illegal immigrants, 58% say they approve of it, while 42% disapprove.

Opinions were more mixed on the president’s economic efforts.

When asked whether Trump is focusing enough attention on lowering prices, 64% said he’s not working on the problem enough. 31% say he’s focusing the right amount of time on it, while 5% say he’s focusing too much on prices.

Similarly, when asked about Trump’s focus on tariffs, 7% say he’s not focusing on this issue enough, while 38% say he’s spending the right amount of time on it, and 55% say he’s focusing too much on it.

The CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,609 U.S. adults interviewed between March 27-28, 2025. The margin of error is ±2.3 points.
