Autism Awareness event provides resources and programs for River Region

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day with the month of April being National Autism Awareness Month.

“When you’re in a public place and you see someone with autism and they may have a outburst, it’s important for those to realize how to react to it and understand it a little bit better as well,” stated Wendy Dobbs who is the Director of the Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center.

The City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation held an Autism Awareness event for the surrounding community. Guest Speaker Shelby Dipilla, of Beacon of Hope and Akilli’s House, discussed autism education, challenging existing perceptions, and the stigmas surrounding autism today.

“Research shows that if we involve person’s with autism in their communities, they have a better quality of life overall,” stated Dipilla. “We talked about that today and then I also brought the Akilli’s House sensory materials that we developed that are meant for community organizations to use to help make the community more accessible.”

The event also provided guests with resources and programs geared toward individuals on the autism spectrum.

If you want to be supportive of autism awareness, you can wear the color blue for the entire month of April.
