Former Alabama Lieutenant Governor George McMillan has died at the age of 81.

McMillan was born in Greenville in 1943. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives before being elected lieutenant governor in 1978. He ran for governor in 1982, but lost to George C. Wallace, who won his fourth and final term that year.

Later, McMillan started the long-running City Stages music festival in Birmingham.

Gov. Kay Ivey released this statement regarding his death:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former lieutenant governor and my good friend, George McMillan. My friendship with George dates back to our days serving in student government at Auburn University. He treasured being in public service and was a man of great ideas throughout his life, especially while he served our state as lieutenant governor and in the Legislature. My prayers are with him and his loved ones. He will be greatly missed!”

Ivey said she and McMillan both helped Lurleen Wallace in her successful 1966 campaign for governor while they both were students at Auburn.
