ACTION 8 UPDATE: Man in officer-involved shooting in Opelika identified
ACTION 8 UPDATE: The name of the man who was shot in an officer-involved shooting in Opelika has been released.
Opelika police say at about 9:37PM Saturday night, April 26, they were called to a domestic dispute in the 1300 block of South Long Street. That’s between York Avenue and Fredrick Road.
Police say the officer encountered 75-year-old Charles Winston of Opelika, who they believed to have a handgun. Police say that led an officer to fire his gun, hitting Winston in the leg.
Upon further investigation, police say the handgun was a full-sized replica of a Beretta 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
Winston was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, Georgia, for treatment. Winston was treated and released and was eventually booked into the Lee County Jail.
No officers were injured.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) was called in to investigate in accordance with department protocol, police say.
They say all evidence and videos will be turned over to SBI for their investigation.
