Fifth-grade students in Montgomery learn about law enforcement
Fifth-grade students in Montgomery Public Schools had a chance to learn about law enforcement this school year.
They took part in the I-Lead program. More than 350 students from 12 schools took part in the program, which ended with a celebration yesterday at Riverfront Park downtown.
This program allows law enforcement to mentor students and shows how committed they are to helping them succeed.
At the celebration, teachers and students enjoyed a fun cruise on the Harriott II riverboat, played games and watched demonstrations from law enforcement.
“Number one, I want them to begin to respect authority knowing that law enforcement are here to help, so we’ve got to teach our kids to respect authority, also life skills, learning how to avoid conflict, so we are teaching them conflict resolution, teaching them not to bully, just alternative ways other than getting involved in crime and negative behavior,” Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver told Action 8 News.
Teachers say that this age is important because the fifth-graders will soon be making the journey into middle school.
