Respite for All Foundation Premieres Dementia-Focused Documentary at Montgomery’s Capri Theatre

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — The Respite for All Foundation premiered its first documentary, A Place of Belonging, at the Capri Theatre on May 1, shining a light on the lives of seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The documentary features stories from several Respite for All communities, including locations in Montgomery, Birmingham, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and McDonough, Georgia. Much of the footage was filmed at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, where the foundation’s work first began.

The Respite for All Foundation (RFA) helps churches and senior service organizations create engaging, volunteer-based programs for seniors with dementia. The organization was officially established in 2019 but began in 2012 when Daphne Johnston partnered with then-senior minister Lawson Bryan to launch a Respite Ministry at First United Methodist Church.

Following national recognition of the ministry, Johnston and care partner Warren Barrow co-founded RFA to expand the model nationwide. By mid-2025, the foundation’s network is expected to grow to 60 locations across 18 states.

As part of its ongoing outreach, RFA will host its Brain Science Luncheon on Oct. 9, featuring bestselling author and neuroscientist Lisa Genova.
