The Equal Justice Initiative has announced 37 students in Montgomery Public Schools have won a Legacy Scholarship.

Each winner has received $10,000 to pursue their future studies. They are each a senior at one of Montgomery’s eight public high schools.

EJI says this year’s legacy scholar recipients were selected based on essays that reflect on the students’ experience visiting EJI’s Freedom Monument Sculpture Park or their efforts at school.

“We are excited to support these extraordinary young people who have distinguished themselves at their schools,” EJI founder and director Bryan Stevenson said.

“Area students need to be supported, encouraged and affirmed when they work hard and strive to achieve greatness. Providing scholarships to MPS students and their families has been a joyous and uplifting experience for us and we look forward to continuing our work with Montgomery high school students,” he said.

More than 200 family members, teachers and community members recently gathered at EJI’s Legacy Hall as the students were presented with their scholarships.
