Twins win 66th Jimmy Hitchcock Awards
Trinity basketball standouts Francie and John Morris took home top honors Tuesday night at the 66th annual Hitchcock Awards, which celebrates outstanding high school senior athletes from the River Region.
The twins were selected from a pool of nominees recognized for demonstrating leadership in athletics, academics, church and community service.
“It was so sweet, especially when our parents were crying,” Francie Morris said. “Our mom has been such an influence on our lives. Yes we’ve gone through hard things, but it’s helped us so much.”
John Morris praised his sister during the ceremony: “Francie, like I said up there, she really fights for me, and she’s fierce and she’s determined, but she’s always in my corner.”
He added with a smile, “I really recommend having a twin, and I know people can’t really choose that.”
The ceremony, held at Frazer Church, brought together athletes, families, coaches and community members. Each nominee received a plaque commemorating their achievements.
The Hitchcock awards are named after Jimmy Hitchcock, a former Auburn University football player and Major League Baseball athlete.
AJ Hernandez, president of YMCA of Greater Montgomery, emphasized the lasting impact of the awards.
“It’s a testament to the power of Jimmy Hitchcock,” Hernandez said. “A lot of people don’t realize many communities around the country have taken this program and emulated it because they see the power of what it is.”
Francie is headedto play basketball at Samford, while John will continue his career at Hillsdale College
