Seniors walk the halls as Autaugaville School prepares to close
Members of the senior class at Autaugaville School walked the halls one final time before graduation. The final walk takes on a new meaning this year.
As Action 8 News has reported, Autaugaville School will be closing after the school year ends. The Autauga County school board voted unanimously earlier this year to close its doors due to declining enrollment, poor academic performance and the district’s continued budgetary constraints.
This final year, 12 students are graduating.
Autauga County School superintendent Lyman Woodfin says the seniors got a great education and will be able to move forward with whatever life brings them.
“On one hand, we are excited for the seniors, and on the other hand, obviously it’s a sad time. Any time you’re closing a school — especially one with the history and tradition of Autaugaville School — it’s a very difficult situation, and so we’re happy to see our seniors graduate sad to see the end of the school,” Woodfin told Action 8 News.
Graduation is tonight at the school’s football field.
The maximum projected enrollment for the K-12 school had been 217, with a more realistic number of possibly 180-190 students, school officials said. Once a school falls below 200 students, the district doesn’t receive state funding for support staff positions such as assistant principal, counselor and media specialist.
