Funeral arrangements for former longtime Montgomery TV news anchor Bob Howell
Funeral arrangements have been announced for Bob Howell, the legendary former news anchor at WSFA.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 30, at 10AM at First Methodist Church, 2416 W Cloverdale Park in Montgomery. A memorial service will follow at 11AM at the church.
(The service will be livestreamed by the church.)
Howell died Friday at the age of 76.
He worked for WSFA two separate times, becoming a household name and face for generations of TV news viewers in our area.
Howell actually started his career in radio in his hometown of Geneva, before spending five years working television in Dothan.
He joined WSFA in 1976 and spent the next 22 years anchoring more than 10,000 newscasts and serving as the managing editor. He presented “The 6 O’Clock Report” and “The 10 O’Clock Report” through times both good and bad in our area, building a loyal following for his polished, reassuring delivery.
Howell left WSFA in 1998 to help start a news operation at WNCF ABC 32, which had also hired other longtime WSFA broadcasters. He was also the nightly news anchor.
Howell left WNCF after a couple of years and returned to the nightly anchor chair at WSFA in 2004 before retiring from broadcasting in 2012.
Over the decades, Howell helped train and mentor countless others, including Action 8’s Shane Butler and Glenn Halbrooks, when they both worked at WSFA in the early 1990s. Many people still at WNCF remember him fondly from his time at ABC 32.
All of us at Action 8 News and our family of stations send our prayers to the family of Bob Howell, including his wife Paula and sons Brock and Alex, and to everyone at WSFA 12 News.
