8 ON YOUR SIDE CONSUMER ALERT: Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 1.1 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles because of a software problem involving the rear camera.

The National Highway Safety Administration says the issue could cause the camera to malfunction.

As CBS News reports, “A frozen rear-view camera display image while in reverse can create a false representation of where the vehicle is relative to its surroundings, increasing the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA said.

Ford says it’s not aware of any injuries, thought it has received one report of a minor crash resulting in property damage.

The recall affects 1,075,299 vehicles, including the following Ford and Lincoln models:

Ford:

  • 2021-2024 Bronco
  • 2021-2024 F-150
  • 2021-2024 Edge
  • 2022-2024 Expedition
  • 2022-2025 Transit
  • 2021-2023 Mach-E
  • 2023-2024 Escape
  • 2023-2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600
  • 2024 Ranger
  • 2024 Mustang

Lincoln:

  • 2021-2023 Nautilus
  • 2022-2024 Navigator
  • 2023-2024 Corsair

To fix the problem, a vehicle will need to have its software updated. The free update can be performed in person at a dealership or through a remote, over-the-air update.

Letters are expected to be mailed to owners on June 16 to alert them of the problem. A second letter will be sent once the update is available sometime between July and September, CBS News says that recall documents state.

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 25S49.

Owners can also contact NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to nhtsa.gov. NHTSA’s number for the recall is 25V-315.
