ONLY ON 8: Political analysis from Steve Flowers

ONLY ON 8: Our Action 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers shares his insight on Alabama’s U.S. Senate race, the governor’s race and more.

So far, the U.S. Senate race has attracted Attorney General Steve Marshall, but Flowers says he expects other well-known leaders to be examining that race closely in the coming days.

There are two others in the race right now, former U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson from Birmingham on the Republican side and Kyle Sweetser of Mobile on the Democratic side.

Marshall can’t run again for attorney general due to term limits.

The U.S. Senate seat will be an open position because current U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville has chosen to run for governor following his single six-year term on Capitol Hill.

Flowers says Tuberville will be hard to challenge based on his name recognition, strong polling and ties to President Trump. He discussed whether questions about Tuberville’s Alabama residency will cause problems and whether they matter to voters.

It was 2010 that Republicans fully took control of state politics in Alabama. Flowers talked about what it would take for the Democrats to become competitive again after being the dominant party for generations.
