Man arrested in Lee County homicide

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says a one man is in custody following a shooting over the weekend.

The incident happened around 7:18 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Lee Road 685 N., just east of Opelika.

Once deputies arrived on the scene, they found an adult male victim, identified as 58-year-old Oscar Eiland, with multiple gunshot wounds to the pelvic and groin area.

Deputies performed CPR on the victim until MS arrived. Eiland was taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika where he later died.

Investigators say when the deputies arrived on the scene, they made contact with the suspect, 58-year-old Christopher James Futral, of Opelika.

Futral was hiding behind a fence and later surrendered to law enforcement. Futral was immediately taken into custody.

Investigators recovered a .243 caliber bolt action hunting rifle and multiple spent shell casings from the yard at Futral’s residence.

It was determined that Futral shot the victim from a perched position from approximately 75 yards away. Authorities say Futral admitted to the shooting but stated he missed his intended target.

Futral was arrested and charged with Murder. He is being held in the Lee County Detention Center with no bond, awaiting an Aniah’s Law Hearing.
