Montgomery Fire Chief Miford Jordan announces retirement

Montgomery Fire Chief Miford Jordan has announced his retirement, effective August 1.

Jordan served the Montgomery Fire/Rescue Department for 40 years, with more than 18 years as chief.

During his career, he was the first Black deputy fire chief and the first Black fire chief. He was also the first Black person to serve 40 years in the department and only the third firefighter overall to mark 40 years with the department.

Under his leadership, Montgomery Fire/Rescue received an ISO 1 rating, CFAI and CASS accreditations and new equipment, including fire and medic trucks.

Also, the department made overall donations of nearly $2 million to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, $700,000 to the River Region United Way and $50,000 to various cancer research groups.

Recently, Chief Jordan joined city leaders in opening the new Fire Station 10 on Fairview Avenue at South Court Street.
