VOCAL holds 5K run in Montgomery
Victims of Crime and Leniency (VOCAL) has held a 5K run in Montgomery.
More than 100 runners gathered yesterday on Washington Avenue near the Alabama Capitol.
“We wanted to do something where we could bring the community in. And we also wanted to do something that would show crime victims that they’re being heard. And that, you know, the voices for victims that we’re still speaking for them, even though they’re not here,” Wanda Miller, the executive director of VOCAL, said.
People who have received help from VOCAL say they’re thankful for the organization and and grateful to all of those who want to help.
“VOCAL has been a very big help for me. They allow me to be myself that allow me to release, you know, the grief, the pain that I feel– they allow me to express, you know what’s going on in my life,” Elandris Bannerman, a crime victim, said.
“They have been wonderful, very understanding. They called whenever we needed them to, and they’ve been there a whole lot. We just wanna say we just supporting everybody out here. And there’s a lot of love out here, and we are just happy to be here,” crime victim Kimberly Freeman said.
Both Bannerman and Freeman lost someone they loved to crime.
VOCAL works to advocate for crime victims by serving the community, raising public awareness of crime and through education.
