Montgomery police address weekend crimes in the Capital City

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys held a news conference Monday to address a series of crimes that occurred over the weekend.

The first incident happened Friday around 2:37 a.m. in the 5000 block of Greensboro Court. Police say 13-year-old Diamond Moore was found dead from a gunshot wound.

The second incident happened later around 5:05 p.m. in the 3200 block of Birmingham Highway. Police say an adult male victim was located with a life-threatening gunshot wound.

The latest incident happened Saturday night in the 200 block of Commerce Street. Police say they found a vehicle and buildings damaged as a gunfire. No injuries were reported.

Chief Graboys said in light of these incidents and others, the department is making operational changes to be more proactive when tackling crime.

Some of the changes include instituting targeted traffic enforcement check points and making an extra effort to put known offenders behind bars.

City cameras and license plate readers, along with facial recognition software and drones, will also be used as part of this effort.

“We had the homicide and the critical shooting on Friday – the unacceptable homicide of a 13-year-old child of every possible crime,” said Chief Graboys. “This is the most egregious and it weighs on me. It weighs on all of us at the city and at the police department, we are going to be making every effort and my people are going to be bringing every resource to bear to bring the suspect to justice. My prayers are with the family as they prepare to lay Diamond Moore to rest to the family. I will not stop. We will not stop until this case is solved.”
