Stay safe on the water this Independence Day holiday weekend

Since many of you enjoy celebrating the Fourth of July on the water, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reminds you to be cautious.

ALEA wants you to remember that children under eight years old need to wear a life vest when they’re on the water.

There are new rules about how close boats can get to each other, so make sure you know them before you head out.

ALEA says whether you’re driving a boat or a car, don’t use anything that hurts your ability to drive safely. If you do, you’ll end up in jail. There were zero boating deaths last Memorial Day and Fourth of July, and ALEA wants to keep that going this year.

“We are going to have all available resources just like on the waterways as we continue to get closer to that extended holiday travel holiday period as we get into the Fourth of July travel season. We’re going to have everybody available on Alabama’s waterways, but we’re also going to have everybody available on Alabama’s roadways,” Capt. Jeremy Burkett of ALEA said.

“I’ve got a pile of girls with me here today. This is all the girls that go to church with us and we make sure we get our lifejackets,”  boater Joey O’Bannon said.
