Central Alabama CrimeStoppers hold gun buyback event

People were lined up early Saturday morning to get rid of their unwanted guns.

The Central Alabama CrimeStoppers held its annual gun buyback event in the parking lot of Bryant Missionary Baptist Church on Norman Bridge Road.

People who turned in their guns received cash in the amount of $50 for any rifle or shotgun, $100 for any functioning handgun and $200 for an assault and/or semi-auto rifle.

Organizers say the purpose of the event is to provide a safe and anonymous way for people to turn in guns they no longer need or want.

In past events, many of the participants were widows who were left numerous guns by their loved one, single adults who were given a gun by their parents and were never taught the proper way to use it or parents who didn’t want a gun falling into the hands of their child.

All of the firearms collected will be destroyed.

If you no longer want your gun and missed Saturday’s event, you can call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP.
