Ham radio operators test their skills at annual Field Day

Ham radio operators came together in Elmore County Saturday to test their skills and equipment to ensure readiness.

The Elmore County Amateur Radio Emergency Services met at the Redland Fire Station #2 on Redland Road.

Members of the group use a variety of radios and antennas; some powered only with batteries and solar panels.

The ham radios allow the operators to report damage to Emergency Management Operators should there be a major power outage.

“A major weather event, or other emergencies, can wipe out electrical power and cell service for extended periods,” explained Elmore ARES Emergency Coordinator Steve Bragg. “In those cases, we can assist the EMA and other first responders by providing extra communication, going into the community, looking for damage and those who need assistance, and radioing the information to get help.”

If you’re interested in becoming a ham radio operator, contact your local EMA office.
