Selma city councilwoman wants vacant house fires investigated

A vacant house goes up in flames Thursday morning in Selma — and one city councilwoman wants to know why.

Waka Selmafire0703 VoThe fire happened at a house on the 800 block of First Avenue.

Smoke from the fire could be seen around the city from miles away.

Councilwoman Jannie Thomas says there’ve been several suspicious fires recently at abandoned and neglected properties located in her ward.

“We’d like to know in this neighborhood, what is going on with these homes that don’t have electricity. They are dilapidated homes. No one living in them. No electricity. And the houses are being uhh, they’re burning,” said Thomas.
