Elmore County Kicks Off Yearlong Celebration for America’s 250th Birthday
WETUMPKA, Ala. (WAKA) — Although the Fourth of July weekend is wrapping up, celebrations continue in Elmore County as residents mark the nation’s 250th anniversary.
On Sunday, the county launched A Celebration of America’s Semiquincentennial, a year-long commemoration honoring influential people and pivotal moments from the Revolutionary War.
Historians discussed the life of soldier and prisoner of war Obediah Moore, as well as John Archer Elmore, the founder of Elmore County. Visitors in Wetumpka also viewed artifacts and clothing from the Revolutionary War era.
The community-wide initiative will highlight different war heroes and significant local events each month through June 2026. Organizers say the events are designed to educate, entertain and inspire residents and visitors of all ages.
Programs will be held at various historic and accessible sites across Elmore County. All events are free and open to the public.
Highlights include:
- Revolutionary Soldiers Spotlight: Programs featuring figures such as Obediah Moore, Abraham Mordecai and Deborah Simpson, who made significant contributions during the American Revolution.
- Revolution Rarities: A showcase of rare artifacts and lesser-known stories from the Revolutionary era.
- Continental Navy Day: An exploration of the maritime legacy of the war, with interactive exhibits and expert presentations.
Souvenir T-shirts will be available at each event while supplies last.
