Man dead after barricade situation, officer-involved shooting in Opelika

OPELIKA, Ala (WAKA) – Opelika police say a man has been shot and killed after a barricade situation at a home.

According to Opelika police, officers responded to the 3000 Block of Wymond Drive for a domestic violence call Wednesday night around 10:41 p.m. Police say when they arrived, they encountered a 32-year-old man who was irate and carried a gun.

Police say the man barricaded himself in the home with a woman and 2-year-old child inside.

Opelika Crisis Negotiators and the Lee County SWAT Team were sent to the home to help.

The woman was able to safely leave. However, the child remained with the man.

Police say an officer-involved shooting followed, and the man died at the scene.

Both the woman and child were uninjured.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate. Once they have completed a full and thorough investigation, the results will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office who will present the findings to a Lee County Grand Jury. Any further inquiries about the investigation should be directed to SBI or the Lee County District Attorney’s office.
