Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Names Alice Novak as Interim Director

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — The Board of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts has appointed a new interim director following the resolution of a long-running governance dispute between the City of Montgomery and the museum’s board.

The museum has been without a director for two and a half years. On Friday, the board voted unanimously to name Alice Novak as the museum’s temporary director.

Novak has held multiple positions at the museum over the past 20 years. Board President Bill Ford said her experience will be vital as the search for a permanent director continues. Ford says museum employees and benefactors of the museum are excited about her taking the helm.

“Anybody else that would come into Montgomery would have to learn the ropes, but she’s tied all the ropes originally, so she has a knowledge of how everything is put together,” Ford said. “With Alice as a person, with her vast wealth of knowledge across so many different areas that are vital for the operation of the museum — from governance to the physical plant to security — she just has a familiarity. She’s just got a love for art, and that’s what we all share, and hopefully that is what everybody will focus on.”

A nationwide search for the museum’s permanent director is underway. The board hopes to have a new leader in place within the next six months.
