Ground broken for organic urban market in Montgomery

Ground has been broken for Montgomery’s first community organic urban farm and market.
The market is co-founded by sisters Erica and Erin Washington.
They want to honor the legacy of their great-grandparents who ran a grocery store on the very same lot in the 1940s.
Food will be grown on five green spaces in West Montgomery and a 10-acre farm just outside of the city. Together, they will bring more organic and locally-grown produce to the city.
“Now more than ever it’s very important that we’re all growing our own food and sharing with your neighbors,” Erica Washington told Action 8 News. “We were blessed to be able to start growing on a farm to create a larger distribution of food but we can all make an effort, each in our own ways on your windowsill, in your backyard. Fresh food is very important for our health, our wellness, our well-being and ultimately is what’s going to strengthen our community and keep us going forward.”
“I am elated that we are moving forward now that people are beginning to say in these food deserts that we have now where we can’t even get decent food that we are stepping up and saying we should help to feed our community,” Montgomery resident Georgette Norman said.
The market is scheduled to open this fall.
