South African septic system technology brought to Lowndes Co.

From the West Alabama Newsroom–

People in rural Lowndes County could soon have a new option available to them — to deal with ongoing wastewater and sewage issues.

Waka Lcsewertech0722 VoOfficials with the Black Belt Unincorporated Wastewater Program — have brought in a new technology from South Africa.

Program officials hope the above ground onsite septic system will help put an end to the practice of straight piping sewage in the county.

“When you have raw sewage coming out of your house and onto the ground, those pathogens pass from the feet, to the hands, to the body, and they make you sick,” said Douglas Molthusi Guy.

“Environmentally unsafe, contaminants grow in ground water and those are things we can help to eliminate and improve the people’s standard of living,” said Letsatsi Lesufi.

Project officials are in the process of selecting two pilot sites that will provide samples — to show that the system works up to U. S. environmental standards.
