Faulkner University Hosts Back-to-School Bash for Montgomery Area Students

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — With the first day of school fast approaching, Faulkner University is helping young students get ready for the classroom.

The university hosted a Back-to-School Bash on Sunday afternoon at its Therapy & Research Center. Children received free school supplies and participated in hands-on activities designed to build practical skills and boost their confidence.

Students were given handwriting tips — including how to write in cursive — and learned basic skills such as how to tie their shoes. They also enjoyed face painting, arts and crafts, and received bags filled with school essentials to take home. To help beat the heat, Nancy’s Italian Ice provided frozen treats.

Volunteers, many of whom are part of Faulkner’s occupational therapy program, said they were excited to help children feel prepared and enthusiastic about returning to school.

“To know that the sky’s the limit, always reach back and pull someone else up when a hand is given to you,” said Tenika Danley, Academic Field Work Coordinator for Occupational Therapy. “If you’re in a position to be a lending ear or a helpful hand to someone, always take the opportunity to do that.”

Emilee Arrington, an occupational therapy student, said the experience was especially meaningful.

“Having an opportunity to give back to the community that means so much to me is just very fulfilling and inspiring. It is something my family has instilled in my heart,” Arrington said. “Faulkner’s big thing is service. We just love to serve the community.”
