Water system improvements bring higher water bills to some Georgiana residents
Georgiana residents say their water bills are going up following a water rehabilitation project.
The city funded the $9 million project with a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
Before the project, each water meter in city limits was tied together. That made it impossible to gauge how much water each customer used. With the improvement, water meters can track individual usage. That’s why some residents are paying more.
Georgiana Mayor Frank Betterton told Action 8 News the improvement meant replacing every water meter in the city.
There is help for people who can’t afford the increase. Residents can contact the Georgiana Water Board to create a special payment plan to catch up on their bill.
