Behind the Biscuits: Owen Wild

Montgomery Biscuits Pitcher Owen Wild grew up playing baseball in Washington, and he loved the game from the beginning.

“I grew up playing little league, tee ball and all that in Sacramento. Then, when I was in third grade I think we moved up to Washington State and that’s where I kind of played my little league and my travel ball and what not,” explains Wild.

Throughout high school, baseball was not the only thing that Owen participated in. Interestingly enough, he followed in his brother’s footsteps and took up the sport of water polo.

“I got thrown in the pool, and I didn’t learn how to tread water for about a year and a half. So I was in there just trying not to drown, and obviously I had a good arm from playing baseball, so I could shoot the water polo ball. My freshman and sophomore years my brother made me play and when he graduated high school I was like well I’m already here I’m better at swimming now I may as well play out,” says Wild.

Following high school Owen wrapped up his water polo career, but he stuck with baseball. Owen took his talents to Gonzaga where he would play baseball for the Bulldogs for three season (2021-23.) While at Gonzaga, Owen declared his major to be Mechanical Engineering, and some of the course work that came along with that major Owen says benefitted him on the mound.

“Bernoulli’s Principle and Magnus effect all that kind of stuff applies to baseball. Kind of how the seams spin, like the seams on the ball when we throw high spin rate pitches and how it makes it move. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of that,” explains Wild.

Following his time at Gonzaga, Owen was drafted by the Rays in the 2023 MLB Draft. Owen was chosen in the 7th round as the 213th overall pick.
