“Run with the Senses” held at Montgomery Whitewater

A run has been held at Montgomery Whitewater to help students in Montgomery Public Schools with autism or other sensory disorders.

The school system’s Department of Special Education and the Zach Knight State Farm Insurance Agency hosted a 5K and 10K run yesterday, called “Run with the Senses.” About 50 runners participated.

Organizers say they hope the runners left with a sense of camaraderie and a knowledge of those who have sensory issues.

“It means a lot to our school system, it means a lot to our children, it makes us feel like they are not forgotten that they matter. They are our future and we just really appreciate the community environment involvement and support,” Katrina Jackson, the executive director for special education for Montgomery Public Schools told Action 8 News.

“It’s really important to State Farm in supporting our local community and making sure that we give back and find ways to really invest our time and effort into something that’s important, and I can’t think of a better thing to do than support our local community and our schools and the autistic children and they are special sensory needs and I think that being able to give to that is a very important thing to do,” Zach Knight of the Zach Knight State Farm Insurance Agency said.

Each participant was given a medal. A $2,500 check was presented from State Farm Insurance.

The proceeds will help Montgomery Public Schools purchase sensory items for students with sensory disorders.
