Montgomery County Health Department offering free Narcan to fight drug overdose deaths
Individual naloxone (Narcan) kits are now available to the public for free at the Montgomery County Health Department. No ID or prescription is required.
The Alabama Department of Public Health says the state has been hit especially hard by the opioid epidemic, leading to overdose deaths. It says naloxone (also known as Narcan), is a life-saving medication which can reverse an overdose from opioids, heroin, fentanyl and prescription opioid medications.
ADPH says naloxone can give people a second chance at life and a path toward recovery.
The free naloxone kits being offered by the Montgomery County Health Department can be found at an easy-to-use kiosk. Each kit includes two doses of naloxone nasal spray, instructions for use and resource information for treatment and support.
ADPH says this fast-acting medication has no negative side effects and causes no harm if a person is overdosing on drugs other than opioids.
The kiosk and medication are made possible through collaboration between the Alabama Department of Mental Health and the Pharmacy Division of the Alabama Department of Public Health, supported with funding provided from the CDC’s Overdose Data to Action in States program.
The Montgomery County Health Department is located at 3060 Mobile Highway. It is open from 7:30AM to 5PM Monday through Friday.
