Perry Co. Sheriff shuts down jail following recent inmate escape
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
The Perry County Jail in Marion has been shutdown for repairs after it was damaged earlier this week by an inmate during an escape.
The inmate is now back in custody after family-members convinced him to turn himself in and surrender to authorities.
Sheriff Roy Fikes shut down the jail following the escape. And put his 15 inmates in county jails in Cullman and Wilcox counties.
“After the young man escaped he had knocked a hole in the wall,” said Fikes.
“And went up and done a lot of damage to the jail that people don’t know. And I closed the jail because it’s not ready to house no inmates period, until we get it fixed.”
Fikes says he will reopen the jail when it’s safe to do so. But he did not give a time table for when that would happen.
