Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys had a message for the shooters responsible for the mass shooting downtown that left two people dead and 12 others injured: “All of us are coming for you.”

Graboys, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and members of Montgomery City Council held a news conference this afternoon to provide an update on the investigation into the shooting. So far, no arrests have been made.

As Action 8 News has reported, the shooting happened in a crowded area just before midnight Saturday, October 4, in the area around Bibb and Commerce streets, in the heart of the city’s tourist area where many events had taken place throughout the day.

The two people killed have been identified as 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams. Graboys said of those injured, five have life-threatening injuries while seven others have non-life threatening injuries. He said today that their conditions are unchanged.

Graboys says he expects the investigation to lead to the arrests of several people, but did not provide further details. He said the police department is seeking to speak with everyone in the area when the gunfire happened.

He said the police department has strong leads and several persons of interest.

Montgomery City Council President C.C. Calhoun said that city council will consider expanding the existing curfew for those 17 and under to be citywide. Of those injured, seven are under the age of 20, with the youngest being 16 years old.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said it was “a handful of reckless individuals” who spoiled what was a big Saturday in the city, with multiple events taking place, including many downtown. He said there were officers within 50 feet of the spot where the shots rang out.

Reed offered his thanks to downtown business owners for providing surveillance video and tips to the police department.

Reed said that he has been in contact with the Office of Governor Kay Ivey, with plans to speak in the next 24-48 hours.

Ivey has announced that ALEA will take a larger role in police patrols. Graboys said he welcomed the help. Reed said if structured properly, a partnership with ALEA can be helpful.

Reed outlined several ways the City of Montgomery is supporting the police department, through more spending and better equipment. He called out state preemption laws that put limits on local gun control measures, including the state law on permitless carry.
