Second suspect arrested in Montgomery mass shooting
Montgomery police have announced the arrest of a second suspect in the October 4 mass shooting downtown that left two people dead and a dozen others injured, some critically.
Police have charged 19-year-old Dantavious McGhee with one count of capital murder, nine counts of assault in the first degree and three counts of assault in the second degree. McGhee was taken into custody today and booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
Police say additional arrests are expected.
As Action 8 News has reported, on Friday, October 10, police announced the arrest of a juvenile male on the same charges. His name and age haven’t been released.
The mass shooting led to the deaths of 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams. Morris was pronounced dead at the scene while Williams died at a hospital.
The shooting happened at approximately 11:31PM on Saturday, October 4, near the intersection of Bibb and Commerce streets, in the heart of the city’s downtown tourist district.
Of the 12 injured, five have life-threatening injuries. Seven are under the age of 20, with the youngest being 16 years old. Action 8 News spoke with police today, who told us there hasn’t been any change in their condition.
Police say the progress “reflects the swift response, tireless efforts, and professionalism of the Montgomery Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. MPD extends its gratitude to local and federal law enforcement partners for their continued support and collaboration, which have been instrumental in advancing the case.”

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed has released this statement about the second arrest:
“The second arrest in last week’s downtown shooting is another step toward justice for the victims, their families, and our city.
“From the start, I promised that we would make it a priority to use all of the resources available to catch anyone who chose to fire into a crowd of innocent people. That promise stands.
“We are still pursuing others connected to this horrific shooting, and I want to thank the Montgomery Police Department — along with our local, state, and federal partners — for their relentless work to bring these suspects to justice.
“Their dedication proves that violence will not define Montgomery — nor will it go unanswered.
“We will continue working to make our city safer, to strengthen our communities, and to give our young people better paths than crime or chaos.”
