Alabama State University announces that YMCA is coming to campus

Alabama State University and the YMCA of Greater Montgomery have announced that a YMCA facility is coming to the ASU campus.

This partnership is historic because ASU will be the first HBCU in the country to have a YMCA on their property.

As Action 8 News has reported, the project involves the renovation of a 5,000 square-foot building. The new ASU YMCA will be open to anyone in the community in addition to ASU students, faculty, staff and people who are currently members of the YMCA.

“There have been a lot of YMCAs that have tried to be on HBCU campuses around the country, but I think we were able to make it happen because of the visionary leadership between Dr. Ross and myself to be able to say, ‘Hey, our community needs this and how can we show up to meet community needs,'” YMCA of Greater Montgomery President & CEO AJ Hernandez said.

“When you talk about institutions, do you know a lot of them have wellness centers, but we thought that it would be good for us to partner with an organization that’s committed to wellness to help build our wellness initiative out and so partnering with the YMCA does just that, so we incorporate everything that we’re doing regarding wellness into one package and offer not only to the school but to the community as well,” ASU President Dr. Quinton Ross said.

The new YMCA will be located on the south entrance of the campus off Carter Hill Road and Harris Way. It’s expected to open in spring of 2026.
