A teenager’s life was saved in a house fire thanks to quick action from some Lee County Sheriff’s deputies.

The sheriff’s office got a 911 call just after 4PM on Monday, October 13, about a fire on Lee County Road 41 in the Beauregard community. They say the called said they’d left the kitchen briefly to go to the bathroom only to return to see the kitchen was on fire.

Two deputies arrived at the home, entering the home despite heavy smoke. They crouched low to search for people inside.

They found a 16-year-old girl lying unconscious on the floor, appearing to be overcome by smoke inhalation. The two deputies got her out of the home and into the front yard. They performed emergency measures on her until an ambulance arrived.

No one else was inside.

The Beauregard Volunteer Fire Department put out the fire, which caused damage to the home’s floor and wall.

The sheriff’s office says the teenager had been suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. She has since been released from the hospital.

“The actions of these deputies are yet another example of the type of men and women who are the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, selfless response to emergency situations resulting in the saving of the life of another,” Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said. “The same level of courage and care is often displayed by our city police agencies, full-time and volunteer fire departments, EMS services, and our EMA in their efforts to serve Lee County citizens.”
