A small school in Marion is recognized nationally for its significant role in American history.
Lincoln Normal School is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A historic marker commemorating the designation was unveiled on the campus Thursday morning.
The Lincoln School produced the leaders of the local civil rights movement.
“We learned how to respect each other, how to grow together and how to read, how to write, how to think,” said Lincoln School alumna Willie Mae Crews.
“The collective story of this school and its graduates is worth knowing and absolutely worth telling for generations to come,” said Dr. Valerie Burns with the University of West Alabama.
Some of the distinguished alumni of the Lincoln School include Coretta Scott King, Jimmie Lee Jackson and Albert Turner, Senior.
