Montgomery curfew ordinance under discussion
A committee met this morning to discuss a citywide curfew in the wake of the mass shooting that happened downtown on October 4.
The committee talked about expanding the downtown curfew, which applies to minors defined as persons under the age of 17 years unless they have been emancipated under Alabama law.
Committee members also discussed an ordinance prohibiting the wearing of ski masks or similar face coverings in public places in Montgomery with specific exceptions.
“Our next actions from this point forward will be the creation of a task force that we are getting together from this meeting,” Montgomery City Council Marche Johnson told Action 8 News. “I will be connecting with [Montgomery Public Schools] Superintendent Byrd to make sure that we get those things in place and I will probably ensure that I meet with the neighboring superintendents as well, because other kids from the River Region are also in the city of Montgomery moving around and working.”
The committee says from this meeting, they will have their legal team available for any legal discussion the committee needs to look over the language.
The mass shooting happened near Bibb and Commerce streets. Two people were killed, while 12 others were injured, some seriously. Seven of those injured are under the age of 20, with the youngest being 16 years old.
Four people face charges in the shooting.
