About 20 minutes later, while waiting for a tow truck to arrive, an officer was sitting in his patrol SUV when the vehicle was hit from behind by a car, leaving the officer trapped inside.
Opelika Fire and Rescue got the officer out and provided medical aid before taking him to Piedmont Columbus Regional in Columbus, Georgia, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the car was also taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
Opelika police say this incident serves as an important reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and roadway workers every day. They ask that you remain alert for emergency lights, slow down, and move over when approaching vehicles stopped on the roadside. Your attentiveness can save lives.
