Governor honors Alabama businesses which hire people with disabilities

Gov. Kay Ivey has honored Alabama businesses which hire people with disabilities.

Monday in Montgomery, an awards ceremony was held to recognize the Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities.

Ivey presented the annual awards, honoring people and companies who have made outstanding contributions in promoting employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The event was hosted by the GCEPD and the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Twelve people and businesses received awards, including large and small businesses, employees and public policy makers.

“We have jobs available and we have workers ready to go to work, but we’ve got people with disabilities who often just aren’t afforded the same opportunities as others,” Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services Commissioner Jane Elizabeth Burdeshaw said. “Our goal is to try and create pathways where employers and those employees can see those opportunities and take advantage and fill those jobs that we desperately need to be filled across the great state.”

Ivey also signed a proclamation recognizing October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in Alabama.
