As SNAP benefits end due to government shutdown, here’s where to find food in Montgomery
The City of Montgomery has released a list of places to find food due to the ending of federal SNAP benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources announced earlier this week that federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP) funding would be ending as of Saturday, November 1.
That’s why the city is sharing information to help residents connect with local organizations offering free food and essential support.
“We want to make sure residents know where to turn for help,” Mayor Steven Reed said. “Our goal is to get this information into the hands of those who need it most.”
A number of churches, nonprofits, and food banks across Montgomery are stepping up to provide groceries, meals, and household essentials.
These include:
Heart of Alabama Food Bank – Check here for a list of local pantries.
Hands On River Region – Call or Text 211 — trained specialists will connect you with local food pantries, meal programs, and community resources.
DOTs – Thrift Store Montgomery – Offers free food and household items through its community resource center.
Why Hunger – Call or text your zip code to 1-800-548-6479
Many local houses of worship also offer aid.
