Ribbon cut on new community center, named in memory of Montgomery City Council member’s daughter

The ribbon has been cut on a new $2.5 million community center in Montgomery, which is named in memory of a Montgomery City Council member’s daughter.

The Courtney Harman Pruitt Community Center is on Calmar Drive, just off of Eastern Boulevard near Carriage Hills.  It was built from the ground up. Pruitt died of cancer in 2019 and was the daughter of longtime city council member Glen Pruitt.

“In April 2018, she got cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia,” Councilman Pruitt said. “What I would want you guys to know about Courtney is that she was kind, compassionate, she was a people person and she loved kids.”

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed has acknowledged the work by the previous administration and city council in getting the property where the community center was built.

“This 5,000 square foot center will serve children, families and seniors,” Mayor Reed said. “It will host classrooms, workforce training and programs that help people grow from early learning to continuing education. It’s a community asset that belongs to everyone who calls this area home and it’s only fitting that this building carries the name of someone whose life inspired so many, Courtney Harmon Pruitt.”

Funding came from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and a community block grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
