Where to find food in West Alabama as SNAP benefits end due to government shutdown
The stalemate in Washington and ongoing government shutdown is raising concerns for people who depend on federal food assistance to feed their families.
With food stamp benefits in question, food pantries are gearing up for an increase in the number of families who need their help.
Pastor John Grayson of Gospel Tabernacle Church and the Son Light Center in Selma says they’re ready to help.
“I want to tell people to just keep calm. Let’s don’t get too excited. Don’t panic. whatever you do, don’t panic. It is a crisis but we’re going to make it through it,” Grayson told Action 8 News.
His organizations already hold monthly food giveaways every 4th Thursday at Bloch Park.
He says now there will also be food available for pick-up for people impacted by the government shutdown.
“All of those people can come by, they have to have proof that they are a SNAP recipient or they’re a federal worker, anytime from 10AM to 1 PM by the church at 2300 Summerfield Road. And you can get a bag of food for your family. Or bags of food according to the size of your family.”
The potential food crisis is raising concerns throughout communities.
Not only concerns about how people will feed their children but what some might feel they have to do to do so.
Edith Ruffin of Pine Hill Mission and Food Bank Outreach Program says she’s also ready.
“They need food, children need food. Holidays are approaching. Crime is going to increase. And you know I’m understanding more and more what the Lord meant when He said the poor will be with you always.”
