Elmore County voters deciding fate of Enhance Elmore tax plan
Voters in Elmore County are deciding whether to approve a tax referendum for various improvements throughout the county.
The Enhance Elmore tax plan is expected to generate $4.5 million per year to build a new jail, increase funding for volunteer fire departments and fund infrastructure improvements, like new roads and bridges.
If passed, it would collect a $25 flat assessment on landowners, $150 on homeowners and $300 on business owners annually.
“Nobody wants to pay more tax. I personally don’t want to pay more tax,” Elmore County Commission Chairman Burt Mercer told Action 8 News. “But just like in your household, things cost more money. If your family grows, your house gets too small. You have to get a bigger house. To afford a bigger house, you have to cut your household budget or you have to get another job. It’s the same thing.”
Elmore County residents go to the polls today. The polls are open from 7AM to 7PM.
