Greenville swears in new mayor for the first time in 25 years
The City of Greenville has a new mayor, for the first time since 2000.
The new mayor is Jae’Ques Brown, who was sworn in by Alabama Supreme Court Justice Will Sellers.
Brown is the first Black mayor in the city’s history.
Brown won the seat following a runoff with Dexter McLendon, who had been mayor for 25 years until his defeat.
Brown says he’s ready to implement his vision for Greenville.
“My immediate plate to accomplish right now is transparency and also spearheading some of the projects that are already in motion to make sure they continue to be fulfilled,” Brown told Action 8 News.
One change that happened is that the city council meeting was streamed live over Facebook.
Prior to being elected mayor, Brown was on Greenville City Council for five years.
The city council was also sworn in during yesterday’s ceremony.
