City of Montgomery launches fundraising campaign to build veterans memorial park
The City of Montgomery has announced that it has launched a fundraising campaign to build a veterans memorial park.
The city’s Military and Veterans Commission has announced plans to create the park at 2390 Congressman Dickinson Drive, just inside the bypass. The park would be build near the Gunter Pool and the Gunter Park Skate Park.
The city says the the planned 14.4-acre Veterans Memorial Park will feature a memorial complex designed to honor service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
“The Veterans Memorial Park will stand as a lasting tribute to our heroes and a testament to Montgomery’s commitment to honoring service and building a stronger, healthier community,” Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said.
The city says the project aligns with efforts to support nearby military installations, including Maxwell Air Force Base, Gunter Annex, U.S. Army National Guard Headquarters and other reserve units.
The cost of the park is estimated at $1.28 million. The city says it will be funded entirely through city contributions and community fundraising efforts.
Plans for the park include a central monument, a memorial walk trail, flag plaza, landscape gardens and a water feature, creating a space for reflection and commemoration.
Around that space, the swimming pool and skate park would be improved with picnic areas, walking and biking trails and a playground.
