Alabama Shakespeare Festival celebrating 40 years in Montgomery

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is celebrating 40 years in Montgomery this weekend.

It was founded in 1972 in Anniston at a high school auditorium, then became the state theatre of Alabama before moving to Montgomery in 1985.

It is located in a $21.5 million performing arts complex that was built to house it in a world-class facility. It is the only professional theatre company in Alabama, attracting internationally-known performers and productions.

“We have this wide range in programs that go from Shakespeare to Disney to new works, like Reconstruction that’s coming up later in the season,” Executive Director Todd Schmidt told Action 8 News. “It’s really a testament to the theatre population and the public here and the region that have developed over the 40 years we’ve been here into a real theatre-loving audience.”

The official anniversary date is Sunday, December 7.
