New partnership will bring more books to students in Montgomery Public Schools

Students in Montgomery Public Schools will soon have access to more books, thanks to a partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative.

EJI and Montgomery Public Schools have announced a partnership to help strengthen reading skills and to expand access to high-quality books.

The announcement was made this morning at Highland Gardens Elementary School.

EJI Founder Bryan Stevenson said that they have identified 133 books written by esteemed authors that are tailored specifically for first and second graders.

“We want all of these young people to have their own personal libraries, to explore the things that mean the most to them that help them find their dreams and pursue their dreams with the kind of commitment that is going to be needed in an environment where is sometimes kids that are poor and vulnerable and marginalized don’t get the same opportunities,” Stevenson told Action 8 News.

“As they began to start their home libraries, this is an initial investment, and we are going to continue to invest in those home libraries and so again, we are just so excited about the contributions from Mr. Stevenson and his mark in Montgomery Public schools,” Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd said.

“They will have in their home libraries that we will see not only our students excel in reading and comprehension, but their lives and their futures will be forever transformed,” Yolanda Huntley, media specialist for Montgomery Public Schools, said.

Stevenson said through this partnership, students in the first and second grades will be given at least two books for free that they can take home to enjoy during the holidays.
