River Region United Way to help those affected by Woodley Terrace Apartment Fire

The River Region United Way is helping those displaced by the recent fire at the Woodley Terrace Apartments, which killed a man and two children.

The River Region United Way says it’s working with the owner of another apartment complex to help families secure new housing. The apartment management has agreed to waive security deposits, while the United Way will cover the first month’s rent.

“The Woodley Terrace fire affected many neighbors who called the place home. River Region United Way is assisting families in relocating to another home, but we are calling on our community to help. Your support will help them settle into their new place. These families have lost everything. You can make a financial contribution with 100% going to the families. Your contribution is 100% tax deductible,” River Region United Way President and CEO Jannah Bailey said.

The United Way is working with with The Salvation Army to collect clothing, shoes, furniture and household items for these families. Donations can be dropped off at The Salvation Army, 3460 Carter Hill Road in Montgomery. When dropping off items, please specify that donations are to support Woodley Terrace Families.

If you wish to make a financial contribution, you can text WOODLEY to 41444. Every dollar donated will go directly to the families and individuals impacted by this tragic event, the River Region United Way said.

As Action 8 News has reported, the fire happened shortly after 8AM on Sunday, December 21. An 8-year-old boy was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. Two days later, 64-year-old Johnny Payne died from injuries suffered in the fire. On Christmas Eve, a 9-year-old girl died of injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
